The Santa Lucia acquisition,
encompassing Santa Lucia Ranch and the Rancho Seco, comprises
10,000 acres of private land and 27,000 acres of grazing leases
in the stunning Altar Valley. This entire landscape was approved
for protection by voters on May 18, 2004. Its preservation has
been an ongoing concern of the Arizona Open Land Trust and Pima
County for more than four years. It is the largest private land
purchase in the history of Pima County. Read

As
one of Tucson's last remaining flourishing riparian areas, the
West Branch of the Santa Cruz River is an important remnant
of one of the region's richest original ecological areas. The
Trust has been working with the West Branch neighborhood since
2002 to plan for and implement numerous habitat restoration
and enhancement projects. Our
most recent habitat protection endeavors include providing funds
for landowners to plant native velvet mesquite trees throughout
the floodplain, assisting private landowners with their efforts
to receive reclaimed water for irrigating native plants, and
partnering with Tucson Audubon Society and City High School
to prepare a restoration site and photographic display on the
cultural and ecological heritage of the West Branch of the Santa
Cruz River.
